In Sept the salmon, KINGS and COHO start to show themselves in the estuary of the Salmon River. King salmon arrive and are simply in tackle busting condition still very fresh from the deep waters of lake Ontario these fish enter the salmon river estuary and stage until their biological clocks tell them its time to start the journey up stream to there spawning grounds. We fish this area with the use of our drift boats. This is an interesting way to fish for salmon we will fish the Salmon River estuary at night with spinning gear or trolling plugs, the excitement is fast and furious. Most nights we have to put some rods away because we just cant keep up with all of them. Remember these fish are still fresh and silver most of the time. As the fish move further up the estuary we will start fishing the day light hours. KINGS 12-35lb up to 40lb COHO 5-20lb up to 30lb.

As the fish start to run the Salmon River we will venture up into some of the famous Salmon River fishing pools and some that are a little less famous if you catch my drift. These fish are beginning to get aggressive as they start there spawning rituals. The buck (MALES) will fight for the honor of a hen (FEMALE) salmon. Again the best way to target these aggressive fish will be with a drift boat. The salmon river offers many places to put the boat in and drift down this scenic water way it is not unusual to see many different types of wildlife. Many times we will have to chase a fish after a hook up, and its nice to have the TAXI waiting especially after a long day of battling trophy class fish. During this time the illusive October browns will start to show up along with the chrome colored steelhead. There are many techniques to fish the Salmon River from fly-fishing to centerpinning (Canadian style float fishing,) we do it all. We started offering centerpin fishing in the 2000 season. So we know what we are doing. This is a great way to target Salmon River steelhead, monster browns and salmon. We also spin, fly-fish and plug. When you fish with me I’m not just a guide I’m a teacher. There are no secrets. STEELHEAD 8-20LB up to 25lb Browns 5-15lb up to 20lb

This is the time that the steelhead are getting into full swing they are entering into the salmon river and Oswego rivers in great numbers. They will hold over in the river threw the winter months, at this time of year most of the crowds are gone, this gives you an opportunity to fish more water. If you ask me this is the best time of year to catch a monster steelhead just before early spring when they start there spawning activities, they will spawn in the months of March and April then head back to the lake, these fish are known as spring drop backs, these fish are all but starving from all the spawning activity and are very, very aggressive fish. Don’t forget about our SPECIAL trip to OAK ORCHARD CREEK for monster browns. This fills up fast so book early.
